Traditional Irish Crafts and Where to Experience Them in Ireland

When most people think of Ireland, they picture green fields, rugged coastlines, cosy pubs, and maybe even a castle or two. But part of what makes this little island of ours so special is the living traditions that you can still see (and try!) today. From herding sheep with skilled border collies to shaping clay in a pottery studio, Irish crafts bring our country’s culture to life in ways you can touch, hear, and even take home.

At Overland Ireland, we love weaving these experiences into our tours, be it on our small-group tours of Ireland or as part of custom Ireland tours that we craft to individual needs. They offer the kind of moments that stay with you long after the trip is over, giving you more than just memories — you’ll have stories to share, new skills, and sometimes even a handmade souvenir.

Below, we have listed some of our favorite traditional Irish crafts and where you can experience them. Scroll down to dive in!

Experience the Art of a Sheepdog Demonstration on an Irish Farm

Sheep farming has been part of Irish life for centuries, and watching a sheepdog at work is as entertaining as it is impressive. With just a few whistles and calls, the farmer guides their border collies to move sheep with precision. It’s part skill, part partnership, and all tradition.

For many of our guests, this experience ends up being one of the highlights of their trip. There’s something magical about standing in a field in the Irish countryside, the hills rolling all around you, as a dog rounds up a flock like it’s second nature.

At Overland, we love sheep dog shows as much as our guests, which is why we have included an awe-inspiring demonstration on several of our trips, including the Ultimate Ireland 10-Day Tour. It’s one of those rare activities that’s fun for everyone, from families and couples to solo travellers.

Traditional Jewellery Making in Northern Ireland

If you’re heading north and have a passion for nature as well as traditional Irish crafts, you’re in for a treat. While the Causeway Coastal Route and Giant’s Causeway steal the show in Northern Ireland, the Gobbins cliff path (on the peninsula of Islandmagee) is another natural gem worth exploring. But while the sea views will blow you away, the area has more to offer than just scenery.

Nearby, you’ll find Gobbins Crafts, a small jewellery studio where local artisans keep traditional techniques alive. Here, you can watch jewellery being made or even try it yourself. Visitors get the chance to create a piece to take home, which makes for a far more meaningful souvenir than something bought in a gift shop.

Let the Island of Ireland Inspire You at an Économusée Workshop Experience

Staying in Islandmagee, you’ll find the studio of Audrey Kyle, an artist who has embraced the “Économusée” model. The idea is simple: artists open their doors, sharing not only their finished work but the process behind it. Visitors can learn about traditional crafts, hear the stories that inspire them, and even try their hand at creating something themselves.

This is where travel becomes more than sightseeing — it’s about connection. Spending an afternoon in a workshop like this, surrounded by inspiring Irish nature, gives you a window into the rich creativity and heritage of Ireland’s artistic tradition.

Get Hands-On with a Pottery Experience in Ireland

Kinsale is famous for its colourful streets and fantastic food, but tucked among its galleries and shops is Kinsale Pottery, a studio where visitors can roll up their sleeves and get creative. Whether you’re shaping clay on the wheel or decorating a piece to fire in the kiln, the workshops are designed for beginners and seasoned artists alike.

It’s messy, fun, and surprisingly relaxing. Plus, there’s something special about making a piece of pottery in a town known for its artistic spirit!

We often visit Kinsale on our southern routes, such as the Spectacular South and West Ireland Tour, where one of our expert guide friends leads you on a walking tour through this beautiful fishing town.

Take a Woodturning Class in Ireland and Turn Raw Timber into Art

Ireland has a long tradition of working with wood, from building boats to carving everyday household items. At Ambrose & Brid, visitors can learn the art of woodturning, shaping native Irish timber into bowls, vases, or decorative pieces. All materials are included in their courses, and so is lunch!

There’s something grounding about working with natural materials, especially when the wood has a story of its own — many pieces come from local trees with deep roots in the community. This kind of experience suits travellers who like to slow down, get hands-on, and connect with Ireland’s traditions in a tangible way.

Create Natural Art in Ireland’s Wild Countryside

For a creative experience that blends art and nature, Windrush Farm in County Wicklow is a wonderful choice. Here, you can take part in workshops that use natural materials like clay, wood, and found objects to create art inspired by the landscape. While these workshops are open to absolute beginners, they’re best suited to older teenagers and adults.

Set on a working farm, the setting is just as inspiring as the activity. Wicklow is already known as the “Garden of Ireland,” so spending time outdoors here feels like a natural extension of the trip. It’s the kind of slow, meaningful travel that many of our guests are looking for.

While most of our pre-planned tours explore the west coast of Ireland, our High Life Self-Drive Ireland Trip and Ancient East Ireland Road Trip both pass through Wicklow. While you may not have time to stop and take a class, you can still find inspiration in the same beautiful scenery!

Why Traditional Crafts Make Your Ireland Trip More Meaningful

It’s easy to tick off big attractions on a tour of Ireland: the Cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry, and the Blarney Stone. And they’re all worth it! But weaving in traditional crafts changes the rhythm of your trip.

Craft experiences give you time to slow down and connect with people, with skills passed down for generations, and with the culture that makes Ireland unique. You walk away with more than photos: sometimes it’s a handmade bowl or piece of jewellery, sometimes it’s just the memory of a sheepdog darting across a hillside. Either way, it’s these experiences that often mean the most.

At Overland Ireland, we can help you build these moments into your trip. Whether you’re joining one of our self-drive tours or creating one of our tailor-made tours of Ireland, our team knows where to find the workshops, demonstrations, and studios that bring Ireland’s traditions to life.
