Irish Adventure holidays Ireland, destination Westport

For our team in Ireland Adventure Tour, Westport will always have a special place as some of us have spent a good few years there. Few towns in Ireland can match Westport’s charisma and continental flavour. Cheerful, multi-coloured shop fronts jostle for attention with an attractive selection of shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants. Little wonder it has become one of Ireland’s most popular and cosmopolitan adventure holiday destinations.

A safe haven, Westport kisses the southeast shores of the Atlantic inlet of Clew Bay and lies against the backdrop of the protective Croagh Patrick – under the watchful eye of the chapel at its peak.

So far in 2012, award-winning Westport has already been crowned The Best Place to Live in Ireland, Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town 2012, Ireland’s Best Kept Large Town 2012 and the Retail Excellence Best Town in Ireland, so Ireland adventure tour is happy to have this as a stop on our tour.

Leaving the hustle and bustle behind in Dublin our first stop on tour is Westport. We could not call this your Ireland Adventure Tour without challenging you to climb Croagh Patrick or the Reek as the locals call it. It’s the third highest peak in Mayo, after Mweelrea and Nephin. Best known for its association with Saint Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint, who is said to have fasted for 40 days at the summit in 441AD, Croagh Patrick has been a pilgrimage destination since pre-Christian times. And although it’s a mighty challenge, everyone always agrees that the views from the top are well worth it.

Our accommodation provider in Westport is the Elephant B&B which is a boutique B&B that serves amazing breakfasts as the meat is provided from their own butcher next door. No night would be complete with a good few pints of Guinness and some great music offered by the charming pubs Westport has on offer.
